What is Breathwork and Why It’s So Powerful - A Personal Journey

At Thyme For Healing, one of the most transformative practices I share with my clients is breathwork. It’s simple, accessible, and incredibly powerful. If you’re wondering what breathwork is and why it’s so impactful, I want to share from my own personal experience and the healing journeys I’ve witnessed along the way.


What is Breathwork?

Breathwork refers to a variety of breathing techniques used intentionally to improve physical, mental, and emotional well-being. In simple terms, it’s a practice that involves consciously controlling your breath to influence your body and mind. Whether through deep, slow breaths or rapid, rhythmic breathing patterns, breathwork is a way to tap into the natural power of your breath to shift your energy, release stress, and promote healing.


How Breathwork Transformed My Life

I’ll never forget the first breathwork session I ever attended—it completely rocked my world. I went in with no expectations. Breathwork was a new practice to me, but I was curious and eager to explore something I already did every single day of my life: breathe. I had no idea what I was about to experience. It was an active breathing class, and as soon as I started, I felt the energy shift.


Within minutes, I found myself in a psychedelic state, unlike anything I’d ever experienced. It was as though my body and mind were completely free—uncluttered by thoughts, distractions, or the usual stresses. Emotions came up that I hadn’t realized were lingering beneath the surface, and in that space, I was able to release them. I laughed, I cried, and I fell into total bliss. I had no words for what was happening—I was simply in awe of the power of my own breath.


But the aftermath was a little different. After that intense release, I was left with so many emotions I didn’t know how to handle. I felt raw, open, and a little vulnerable. I didn’t expect to feel overwhelmed by all that had surfaced, but I was so grateful for the experience that I knew I needed to explore this practice further.


That’s when I decided to get certified not only in breathwork but also in trauma awareness. I wanted to be able to guide others through the emotional and energetic releases that often come up during these sessions. Breathwork has the power to bring trauma to the surface, and with that, you may need additional support to process and heal. This is why I feel so passionate about offering breathwork, and why I’ve made sure to integrate trauma awareness into my certification. I want to help my clients navigate the powerful emotions that may arise and create a safe space for healing.


The Power of Breathwork

There’s something truly magical about the breath. It’s a constant companion throughout our lives, and yet most of the time, we aren’t fully aware of it. Breathwork brings us back to this basic life force, showing us how we can use our breath to reclaim control, reset our energy, and transform our emotional state.

Here are just a few reasons why I believe breathwork is so powerful:


Emotional Release

Our breath holds emotions. When we’re holding onto stress, grief, or anxiety, our breath becomes shallow or tight. By consciously engaging with our breath, we can release old emotions that no longer serve us. Breathwork helps us process and let go of emotional baggage, making space for more peace and clarity.

Stress Reduction

In our fast-paced world, we’re often in a constant state of fight-or-flight, which leads to stress and burnout. Breathwork activates the parasympathetic nervous system—the body’s relaxation response—helping to reduce anxiety and lower cortisol levels. This means you can come back to a state of calm, no matter what life throws at you.

Increased Energy and Focus

By breathing intentionally, you’re delivering more oxygen to your brain and body, which boosts energy and enhances mental clarity. Breathwork helps you become more focused and present, which is essential for navigating both your day-to-day tasks and big life decisions.

Healing

Breathwork can be a catalyst for deep healing. It creates an opportunity for self-reflection, and many people find that it allows them to uncover unresolved pain or trauma. It’s a powerful tool for emotional and physical healing, as it encourages a deeper connection to your body and spirit.

Connection

Breathwork helps us reconnect with ourselves, bringing us back to the present moment. It’s also a tool I use in retreats and group settings to create a sense of community, where participants share a collective experience of healing. It’s beautiful to witness how breathwork fosters a sense of unity and connection, both internally and externally.


Why Breathwork Works

One of the things that excites me most about breathwork is how accessible it is. It’s something you can practice anywhere, anytime—whether you’re in a quiet space or in the midst of a busy day. You don’t need any special equipment or complicated instructions. All you need is your breath.


But even though it’s simple, breathwork is powerful because it works on multiple levels—physical, emotional, and spiritual. It helps release stagnant energy, promotes relaxation, and allows you to access parts of yourself that might feel hidden or blocked. It’s a direct path to self-healing, and the more you practice, the more you’ll begin to see how it shapes your experience of life.
